Though they have long been a Vanderbilt tradition, the VandyGirls became a subject of debate and derision last spring with the publication of a now-infamous Seventeen article. Even before that, a "Hustler" editorial written three years ago introduced the term and characterized the VandyGirls as "nearly identical debutantes strolling to class in their tube tops, tight, black Vandy-pants, and Nine West platforms."1 While the issue of whether or not this image represents the majority of Vanderbilt women is not as pivotal an issue as residential colleges or national rankings, it provoked more discussion last spring than these topics.
